New Delhi: The Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR) has challenged the constitutional validity of Maharashtra’s new conversion law, the ‘Maharashtra Freedom of Religion Act, 2026’, in the Supreme Court. The organization has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in this regard, seeking judicial review of various provisions of the law. According to a press release issued by APCR, the petition was filed on October 14, 2026, through Shakir Sheikh, Secretary of the Maharashtra unit, and has been assigned Diary Number 64972/2026.

The organization contends that certain provisions of the law may impact fundamental rights, including the freedom of conscience, the right to profess, practice, and propagate religion, as well as personal liberty, privacy, and equality. In its petition, APCR has raised questions about the constitutional limits of state intervention in matters of personal autonomy and religious freedom. The organization believes that judicial scrutiny of the constitutionality of these provisions is essential.

The legal team filing the petition includes Advocate Abdul Qadir Abbas, Advocate-on-Record Mohd Saad Khan, Advocate Aman Siddiqui, and Advocate M. Huzaifa.
